Powertrain Overview

HSV's MY17 range features four unique powertrains including the most powerful engine ever fitted to an Australian made vehicle.

Powertrain highlights in the range include:

  • 410kW / 691Nm 6.2 Litre Supercharged LSA Generation IV Alloy V8 engine (standard on Maloo R8 LSA, ClubSport R8 LSA, ClubSport R8 Tourer LSA & Senator Signature)
  • 430kW / 740Nm 6.2 Litre Supercharged LSA Generation IV Alloy V8 engine (standard on GTS)
  • 435kW / 740Nm 6.2 Litre Supercharged LSA Generation IV Alloy V8 engine (standard on GTSR & GTSR Maloo)
  • 474kW / 815Nm 6.2 Litre Supercharged LS9 Generation IV Alloy V8 engine (standard on GTSR W1)



HSV LS9 Engine

As originally fitted to the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, the LS9 powertrain was specially selected by the HSV engineering team for its superior performance and packaging benefits.

With maximum power and torque outputs of 474kW and 815Nm respectively, this hand-built engine (it takes approximately 5 hours to assemble) is fitted at HSV’s production facility in Clayton, Victoria.

The LS9 powertrain features a raft of unique componentry:

  • Tremec TR-6060 (MH3 spec.) close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission (with oil cooler and twin-plate clutch)
  • Gen VI Supercharger with twin four-lobe rotors (2.3 litres air per revolution)
  • Integrated dual-brick air-to-liquid intercooler
  • Enhanced Generation IV cast aluminium cylinder block
  • Forged aluminium pistons with oil-spray cooling
  • Forged titanium connecting rods
  • Titanium inlet valves
  • Hollow steel exhaust valves
  • Refined low overlap cam
  • High-flow rotocast cylinder heads
  • Centre-feed fuel system
  • Direct-mount ignition coils
  • E67 control module
  • Dry-sump oiling system
  • Heavy-duty accessory drive
  • Carbon fibre airbox
  • Ceramic coated stainless steel headers with integrated catalytic converter
  • Stacked plate water-to-oil engine-oil cooling system

Aided by a high degree of light-weight componentry, the LS9 engine, in addition to ‘Supercar’ levels of power and torque, delivers exceptionally smooth performance.

LS9 Transmission

GTSR W1 is fitted exclusively with Tremec’s TR-6060 (MH3 spec.) close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.

New for HSV, the MH3 gear-set keeps the engine RPMs more centred around the maximum power output and, when coupled with the higher revving LS9 engine, gives the driver a much more useful powerband and, overall, an exceptional driving experience.

Along with the capability to withstand the higher torque output of the LS9 engine, the TR-6060 (MH3 spec.) delivers great overall shift feel with short throws and smooth gear synchronization.

The TR-6060 marries up to the LS9 clutch with a unique input shaft.

Other key TR-6060 (MH3 spec.) features include:

  • Three-piece ‘end load design’ aluminium housing
  • Triple supported output shaft and countershaft
  • Taper bearings and cylindrical roller bearings
  • All speed gears supported by needle bearings
  • Integrated clutch housing (for improved case strength)
  • Two-piece gears with laser welded clutch teeth rings
  • Advanced and asymmetric clutch teeth in second and third gears for improved shifting action
  • Hybrid and sintered bronze double and triple cone synchronizers (which offer lightning quick gear changes with fluid-like engagement).


HSV designed the GTSR W1 airbox with consideration for maximum air-flow, vehicle drive-by noise and water ingress constraints. After several iterations, and CFD (Computational Flow Dynamics) analysis, the current design was finalised.

A carbon fibre construction was then chosen for its structural integrity.

Clutch & Flywheel

The ZF SACHS twin-plate clutch, fitted to GTSR W1, is more closely related to a race-car clutch than a production car clutch. For instance, this unit is not self-adjusting which means the pedal force will change over the life of the clutch. But as there is no adjustment mechanism, we end up with a more compact, lightweight part.

The solid plate flywheel is also lighter and has less inertia than other dual mass flywheels, so both the clutch and flywheel make for a more responsive engine (also more free revving when RPM matching on down-shifts).

Supercharged LSA

The 6.2 litre Supercharged LSA Generation IV Alloy V8 is featured across the entire HSV range (with the exception of GTSR W1), with power and torque now at 410kW/691Nm on Maloo R8 LSA, ClubSport R8 LSA, ClubSport R8 Tourer LSA & Senator Signature and 430kW/740Nm on GTS.

The adoption of a new, hi-flow performance air filter sees maximum power output increase to 435kW on the GTSR and GTSR Maloo, making it the most powerful LSA V8 engine HSV has ever offered.

The LSA engine features a raft of unique componentry:

  • Eaton 4 lobe rotors, 9psi boost, 1.9 litres of air per revolution
  • Stand-alone water-to-air charge-air cooling system
  • Stand-alone transmission and differential cooling system
  • Water-to-oil engine oil cooling system
  • Bi-modal air intake system (GTS, GTSR, and GTSR Maloo only)
  • Hi-flow exhaust system with x-pipe intermediate and Bi-Modal mufflers
  • Hi-flow exhaust manifold and catalytic converters
  • Unique rear suspension module with 9.9“ differential, upgraded drive and prop shafts
  • TR6060 (MG9 spec) 6-speed manual transmission with oil cooler and twin plate clutch
  • Optional 6L90E 6-speed heavy duty automatic transmission with oil cooler, Active Select and Paddle-shifters (standard on ClubSport R8 Tourer LSA)
