3. VN SV5000 (1989)

+

In 1989 the VN SV5000 was arguably the car that “put HSV on the map”. Welcoming the most significant early major investment in HSV’s history, the engine development program came to life with performance being increased to 200kW for the first time. With very limited volume, it was costly, as was the superb body styling package, but the result (many will argue) was the best looking, best performing car ever produced for the time.

Build No.42 in Rose Grey was sent to the UK for HSV founder Tom Walkinshaw’s use and was the car that featured in a Wheels magazine European comparison against a selection of European sports sedans from BMW, Vauxhall and Mercedes.

Dubbed the "Concord of sports sedans", the SV5000 was significantly quicker than the rest, with a caption in the magazine reading "European high-tech was no substitute for fuel-injected Australian cubes. The SV5000 simply drove away."

HSV VN SV5000 owner, John Zammit, remembers:

“My SV5000 (pictured), build number #66 and 1 of only 60 built in Rose Grey.

I’ve owned a few HSV's and will continue to do so, but this is probably my favourite, possibly due to how rare it is, how much I love VN’s and the fact that you just don’t see them anymore.

My favourite part of owning my SV5000 is the fact that from the age of 6 I grew up with one. Dad owned a green one, build number #69, which was in the family for 7 years and was my favourite car he ever owned.

Ten years after Dad sold his I was able to secure my own and they’re only 3 build numbers apart! It really brings back memories for us all, and Dad and I can both say we’ve owned one.”
