Born in a Scottish village close to Edinburgh, Tom Walkinshaw began racing in 1968 and the following year won the Scottish FF1600 title. He then moved into the British Formula 3 Championships, driving for Lotus, followed by stints in a range of categories including Formula 2 and Formula 5000.

In 1974 Tom drove a Ford Capri in the British Touring Car Championship, winning on debut. He established Tom Walkinshaw Racing the following year creating a motorsport and road car business that grew and prospered throughout the following years.

His association with Australia began in 1987 when Tom won a worldwide tender to establish a high-performance arm for GM Holden. And so, HSV was born.

In 1991 Tom was recruited as Engineering Director of the Benetton Formula 1 team which subsequently won the 1994 World Championship. In 1996 he bought the Arrows Formula 1 team.

In 1997 Tom was voted Autocar ‘Man of the Year’. At its peak, Tom Walkinshaw Racing employed 1,500 workers across the United Kingdom, United States, Europe and Australia.

His racing operations won titles and enjoyed success in nearly every category and on every track or circuit competed at the highest level including Formula 1, Nascar, the British Touring Car Championships, Sportscar and the Australian V8 Supercars.

Tom continued to be heavily involved in the operations of HSV (and its sister companies) until he passed away on the 12th December, 2010. Today, Tom’s son Ryan Walkinshaw continues to lead the Walkinshaw Group.
