The new WH Grange is the result of the most
comprehensive development program for any HSV long wheelbase model. The prospect of
healthy export orders has encouraged HSV to allocate extra resources to position the new
WH Grange further away from mainstream Holden long wheelbase models and other models in
the HSV range. The WH Grange introduces an exciting and different approach to high
performance long wheelbase luxury and style.
The sleek, low profile of Holden’s new
WH long wheelbase range provided the ideal starting point for HSV to redefine the Grange
combination of driver involvement and spacious luxury accommodation. Grange buyers now
have the choice of the proven supercharged V6 or the new LS1 5.7 V8. For those luxury
buyers who require an efficient and effortless six cylinder engine, HSV’s
supercharged V6 offers 180 kW and a solid wall of torque and is available to special
order. For those who prefer the immense reserves of a potent V8, the 250 kW HSV version of
the new Chevrolet LS1 V8 introduces a sophisticated free-revving feel while adding another
performance dimension to Grange luxury motoring.
The exterior styling has been the focus of
the most spectacular changes. For the first time, HSV has been able to comprehensively
re-style the front and rear sections of a Holden Long wheelbase model. Ian Callum from
HSV’s TWR parent company has given the WH Grange a lower, more disciplined look that
sets it apart from traditional large Australian luxury cars and positions it aggressively
as a more affordable alternative to the best European and Japanese luxury models. The
front and rear bumper sections unique to the Grange combined with the deep side skirts,
change the profile of the Grange and leave it with a squat, ground hugging stance that
belies its size.
At the front, Ian Callum has given the WH
Grange a bold new look. The challenge was to develop a distinctive identity that moved the
new model into a luxury niche clear of HSV’s elite Senator Signature range. Drawing
on a tradition established by sporting Bentley sedans, the WH Grange has its own chrome
grille profile filled with chrome mesh, a theme that is repeated in the lower air intake.
The new grille with its large centre emblem leaves the bonnet free of ornamentation to
emphasise the raised centre bonnet section which in turn reinforces the muscle-bound
nature of the new model.
HSV has gone to considerable lengths to
keep the exterior detailing simple and elegant. The flush front fog light profile is
unique to the Grange while the boot lid spoiler also exclusive to the Grange is more
subtle than usual in a car with this much performance. The way that the exhaust tip is
contoured to match the sweep of the rear bumper is indicative of the attention to detail.
Badgework is classy and restrained. The unusual 10 spoke 18 inch alloy wheels have a
substantial, structural look for visual balance, the perfect match for a large and
powerful luxury package.
The WH Grange’s look of potent luxury
is reinforced by a new HSV suspension level. Initially, HSV intended to draw on the
chassis development from the standard wheelbase VT models but it soon became apparent that
a fresh approach specific to the new long wheelbase model was required. The brief was to
retain the smooth, limousine like qualities that remain a pre-requisite for long wheelbase
luxury motoring while injecting new levels of driver involvement and excitement. The big
increase in the body stiffness of Holden’s new WH wheelbase platform dictates fewer
compromises. The result was HSV’s new prestige suspension.
The starting point was the grippy
Bridgestone S02 18 inch tyres specifically designed for the VT GTS. The suspension was
then tuned to exploit their extra grip while retaining the comfort levels and driving
effort expected in a benchmark luxury car. Specific HSV springs included heavier rear
springs tuned for the extra rear weight bias of the long wheelbase platform. Monroe
Sensatrac dampers were specifically developed for the WH Grange application with firmer
valving than the Senator to provide extra control under more extreme conditions while
offering initial compliance for a smooth, luxury ride.
Standard rear self-leveling maintains this
control regardless of load, essential in a long wheelbase model where the rear seat
comfort is as important as the front.
