To maintain agility comparable with
HSV’s smaller and lighter models, the new 27 mm front anti-roll bar shared with
HSV’s revised VTII models is balanced by a larger 16 mm anti-roll bar at the rear.
The Grange’s body computer is specifically calibrated to provide a specific linear
power steering curve to match the Grange suspension and tyres while keeping steering
effort within the limits expected in a luxury car. Standard traction control, independent
rear suspension, limited slip differential and ABS add reserves of safety and grip under
all road conditions.
In keeping with the choice of two potent
drivetrains and the fine balance between sports handling and luxury ride, HSV developed a
cabin that reflected the best of what the Caprice had to offer, deleting those items less
relevant to the driver while adding several HSV features to enhance driver involvement and
convenience.
The new leather seats unique to the WH
Grange are the most striking feature of the new cabin, providing individually contoured
seats for four occupants with occasional seating for a fifth passenger in the rear. The
distinctive longitudinal stitch pattern and padding not only generates the feel of a more
traditional luxury interior but provides lateral location to match the Grange’s new
handling capabilities. The new Shale leather colour is exclusive to the Grange.
The front seats feature electric seat
adjustment and a memory for the driver’s seat that will recall pre-set seat and
mirror positions. The leather seat trim continues into the door panels which also feature
woodgrain accents. The dash with its polished chrome highlights and woodgrain surround
matched to the door accents completes the overall impression of a classy interior that
integrates the HSV driver focus with upper level luxury.
Individual HSV interior features include an
HSV instrument cluster with distinctive HSV identification and light background, 250 km/h
speedo and tachometer tailored to HSV engines. A leather bound steering wheel and HSV
electrochromatic self-tinting centre mirror with reading lamps reflect Grange priorities.
The HSV Owner’s Compartment, a feature of the Grange centre console, is upgraded to
include a quality tyre gauge. The unique identification number for each new WH Grange has
been moved to the centre console where any attempt to remove it will render it void.
The Grange has also been the beneficiary of
several important new convenience and safety features introduced with the WH long
wheelbase range. Separate climate control facilities for driver and passenger allow the
driver to personalise the driving environment for maximum alertness and comfort without
impacting on the passenger. Front and side impact airbags combined with the latest in
crash absorbing technology and a much stronger bodyshell offer world class crash
protection. A first aid kit, luggage restraint net and fire extinguisher are also
standard.
The comprehensive WH Grange standard
equipment list includes the HSV audio system with 6 stack CD player, 260 watt speakers,
electric aerial, steering wheel remote controls and pre-wired car phone antenna.
The WH Grange is the first HSV model to be
fitted with the powerful new HSV security system called ESS or Embedded Security System.
It is the third generation of HSV’s benchmark ISS security system and is a
micro-processor controlled immobiliser that automatically interrupts four essential
electrical circuits when armed and prevents the vehicle from being started. The ESS stores
important security codes and every time the vehicle is started it reads these codes. If
any of these codes differ from the stored codes, the ESS prevents the vehicle from
starting. The system is embedded in the vehicle’s main wiring harness, and the
control module which is virtually inaccessible, is connected to wiring that cannot be
distinguished by colour or wire gauge.
Exterior colours include Granada, Phantom,
Heron, Amazon and Tungsten. Grange options include the HSV SatNav Global Positioning
System. The HSV Performance and Premium brake packages are also available on special
order.
HSV are also confident that the new Grange
has the right balance of luxury, style and performance to appeal to a new group of buyers
who may never have considered a large locally built luxury car before. For those who have
been reluctant to move into a vehicle of this size because of extra running costs, the
fuel economy of the V6 supercharged engine and the big drop in fuel consumption that comes
with the LS1 V8 are less obvious but important advances.
Pricing will position the WH Grange well
under the entry levels of mid-range European rear drive models while specifications and
dimensions are closer to the larger models that start at double the Grange’s
pricetag. Not only does the WH Grange introduce new levels of performance, style and
comfort in spacious long wheelbase surroundings, it does so at a price that is achievable
for many Australians.
