There was no home ground victory for the Toll Holden Racing Team at Winton Motor Raceway this weekend.
Toll HRT drivers Garth Tander and Will Davison finished today’s time shortened final race in eighth and 18th positions respectively, while Ford driver James Courtney took his second win for the weekend and his fourth in a row.
Tander started the race from seventh position, but he struggled with tyre life on this #2 Toll HRT Commodore throughout each of the three race stints, the 2007 V8 Supercar Champion driving a solid race to finish inside the top 10.
For Davison, after setting the 12th quickest time in this morning’s 20 minute all-in qualifying session, his disappointing weekend, and year, continued.
Running top 15 comfortably and making his first of two stops on lap 24, like his team-mate Davison had to pit for the second time just 13 laps later when a Safety Car was called on track, the rush to pit lane saw the #22 having to queue behind Tander’s Toll HRT Commodore, losing him vital positions.
Davison’s luck continued when he was hit from behind by Steven Richards’ Falcon on lap 60, turning Davison around, more places lost.
Courtney now leads the championship from Triple Eight’s Jamie Whincup with Lowndes third, Tander dropping to fifth, Davison now sitting 15th after six of 14 rounds.
The Toll HRT will now regroup before the next round of the 2010 V8 Supercar Championship Series, which is the SKYCITY Triple Crown at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway on 18-20 March.
Garth Tander, #2 Toll Holden Racing Team Holden Commodore VE:
"A tough day. We had a few issues going on with the way my Toll HRT Commodore was using its tyres through the different stints. We tried to go not too hard too early to make the tyre live, but it didn’t work out for us. Eighth is probably as best as we could have done considering how the car behaved today. We need to get our head around the soft tyre a bit more; I thought we did in Queensland, but clearly we didn’t get it right here at Winton. I don’t think we’re far away, but there’s a bit of work to be done."
Will Davison, #22 Toll Holden Racing Team Holden Commodore VE:
"Another tough weekend for me and 2010 continues - obviously I’m pretty frustrated. We seemed to have slightly better qualifying pace today, but race trim was pretty similar to Queensland with my Toll HRT Commodore ordinary on the soft tyre - it had no balance, no grip. The race wasn’t helped by having to back up, wait in pit lane for Garth’s stop, and we lost quite a lot of spots there. Then I got whiplashed by Steven Richards at the end crashing into me, sending me off and losing a heap more positions at the end. That’s what happens when you’re struggling for pace, you’re a bit of a mobile chicane. We just need to get our thinking caps on to improve the car on the soft tyre.
