HSV’s first high-performance four-cylinder, the 177kW VXR will make its Australian motorsport debut this weekend at the Alphera Dutton Rally.

Designed specifically for high performance roads cars, the Dutton Rally and the HSV VXR are a perfect fit. Comprising three days and 33 individual stages, the tarmac-only Dutton Rally has an emphasis on fun and will feature events as diverse as quarter-mile drag racing, wet skid-pan, hill-climb, airport dashes, motorkhanas, and circuit sprints at Wakefield Park and Eastern Creek Raceway. The event’s program includes stages in Queanbeyan, Goulburn and Sydney.

The sold out field of 100 cars ranges from A$30,000 to A$300,000, with the A$42,990 HSV VXR one of the most affordable performance cars in the field.

With many of the events being tight and technical, the agility of the VX-R will allow it to exploit its turbocharged 2.0-litre 16v ECOTEC-4 engine, high performance suspension and brakes.

Though most of the field will use competition-derived R-compound semi-slicks, the VX-R will run on Yokohama Advan Sport road tyres, fitted to the factory HSV 19-inch alloys.

With two drivers allowed per entry, the HSV VXR will be driven by Sydney motoring journalists Samantha Stevens and Dean Evans, who have each competed in the two previous NSW Dutton Rallies. Sam and Dean will also be supporting the charity organisation of Kylie Johnston Lung Cancer Network.

Stevens enthused: “I can’t wait to chuck the VXR around and try and beat a few V8s. Of course, if that V8 is an HSV, we might have to reconsider.”

Evans added: “The VX-R is a handful of fun. The power isn’t far off the Vectra Super Tourer of 10 years ago. I’m sure it’ll surprise a few people - not only that it’s an HSV four-cylinder, but that it’s completely standard.”

The event will start this Friday, May 25 at Wakefield Park in Goulburn and Fairbairn Park hillclimb in Queanbeyan, finishing at Eastern Creek Raceway on Sunday May 27.

HSV will follow Sam and Dean’s progress in the Dutton Rally. Please return to www.hsv.com.au for regular updates on the progress of HSV’s new ‘streetfighter’.
