Holden V8 Supercar Champion Garth Tander has issued a timely reminder to motorists to slow down and be safe during the Easter holiday period.

While at the race track his focus is on extracting every last bit of speed out of his Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore, Tander said a motorist’s focus for the road should be on preparation, patience and erring on the side of caution.

2008 saw 26 Australians lose their lives in road traffic accidents over the Easter weekend.

“When it comes to travelling during holiday periods, we can get so preoccupied in packing the car for the trip and so impatient in just wanting to get to where we are going that the basics and safety just go out the window,” Tander said.

“There are five main points I follow whenever I set off on a family holiday, so when it comes to your safety on the road this Easter, make sure you do the following;

1. Vehicle maintenance – check your lights, brakes, indicators, tyre pressures and tread (including spare tyre) and oil level before you set off

2. Drive to suit the conditions especially on country roads and in wet conditions, keep left unless overtaking, adhere to local traffic and road safety signs, and do not speed.

3. Be patient and show courtesy on the busy roads

4. Stop for a break at least once every two hours on long trips

5. Be responsible when it comes to alcohol and driving – the two just don’t mix

“Overall, I think it’s important that everyone errs on the side of caution, the Easter roads will be busy and preparation and patience will be the key to ensuring a safe and happy holiday for everyone,” Tander said.
