In a major coup HSV has snared the services of topflight automotive stylist, Julian Quincey, and has appointed him the company’s new Head of Design.

“This is a first for HSV and an eagerly anticipated appointment”, says Phil Harding, HSV Director of Engineering. “I’ve been actively trying to recruit the ‘right’ person for some time and Julian Quincey has the ideal credentials for the job.”

Quincey studied Industrial Design (Transportation) at the prestigious Coventry Polytechnic and Royal College of Art, in the United Kingdom. Following a short stint at Ford he moved to MG Rover / Land Rover where he was involved in a variety of high profile programmes, including working closely with chief designer, Gerry McGovern, on the styling of the acclaimed MGF sports car. Later he joined TWR UK and, in so doing, was exposed to the first of many HSV design projects.

Indeed, HSV’s two latest creations, the ruggedly sophisticated Avalanche all-wheel drive wagon and the sensuously styled Coupé 4 all-wheel drive sports car, have both come from the ‘pen’ of Julian Quincey.

Despite enjoying the services of high profile stylist, Ian Callum and, later, Neil Simpson, HSV styling has always been conducted via TWR in the UK. As HSV’s first local Head of Design, Quincey will be based at the company’s Clayton headquarters and he is looking forward to his new role.

“HSV now has its largest range ever and there is a sense of excitement in exploring parts of the market that are, as yet, uncharted. There’s opportunity to both strengthen the brand and to develop a coherent design strategy that will reinforce HSV as one of Australia’s great success stories.”

“Also this year will see HSV’s new clay modelling studio fully commissioned allowing us to create design models to the very highest standard, either from digital models or by utilizing HSV’s skilled clay modellers.”

“These cars have a fabulous appeal, with their V8 soundtracks and hardcore performance abilities. The secret of creating a great HSV will centre on strong and simple design statements that strike a chord with the buyers and, hopefully, create an instantly recognizable style.”
